Employee Impact

Employee’s who are exposed to a critical incident can be impacted cognitively, have difficulty concentrating, problem solving, feel confused, behaviorally, want to avoid the area where incident occurred, may withdraw from family and friends, use alcohol or drugs to numb themselves, emotionally, typically the first reactions we see are shock numbness and disbelief, some employees go through this stage quickly while others may take several days, then what we refer to as the emotional roller coaster can start, when one minute the employee feels sad, then angry, then anxious, some employees feel the impact physically, headaches, tightness in neck and back, lack of appetite, trouble sleeping, stomach problems. Not all employees will experience a stress reaction while some who may not have been closely involved may experience several. Some physical symptoms may need to be checked by a doctor.
