Incident Management Team

Preventing School Violence

“April 20, 1999, Littleton, Colorado: – In the deadliest school massacre in the nation’s history, two young men stormed into a suburban high school here at lunch time Tuesday with guns and explosive, killing as many as 23 students and teachers and wounding at least 20 in a five-hour siege, the authorities said.”

The mass shooting was the first at an American school during the 1999 academic year, but revived memories of similar tragedies that struck six different communities in previous years and set off national alarms about teen-age violence. Four girls and a teacher were shot to death and 10 people were wounded during a false fire alarm at a middle school in Jonesboro, Ark.

Because of highly publicized violent occurrences in the schools, violence prevention is in the front of the minds of school staff. The Incident Management Team is an organization that has been in existence since 1985. Initially, we responded to problem employees through Employee Assistance Programs. We also provided crisis response services following traumatic incidents in schools or the workplace. After providing crisis response following violent events and realizing the tremendous cost both emotionally and financially, we have, for the last 14 years have been providing training and consultation to prevent these horrendous types of events from occurring.

The Incident Management Team has developed a comprehensive school safety plan and provides training regarding violence prevention.

Topics in the comprehensive plan and training include:

Ø      Developing/Revising the Safety Policy

Ø      Safety Procedures

Ø      Safety Team Composition and Tasks

Ø      Legal Issues

Ø      Training for the School Community

Ø      Curriculum Components

Ø      Liaison with Community Services

Ø      Security Issues

Ø      Crisis Intervention
